Our National & International Philanthropies
Camp Heartland
Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. has recently taken Camp Heartland on as our official philanthropy. We felt that this was a cause that deserved more attention because of the increasing population of minorities affected by HIV/AIDS. We hope to raise awareness through active fundraising and workshops for the benefit of our community, our hermanas, and, most importantly, the children of Camp Heartland.
Camp Heartland is a national nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS through year-round support, advocacy, recreational programs and community AIDS awareness efforts.
In the company of other children like themselves, they are permitted to forget the stigma of their condition. From singing around a campfire to swimming and other outdoor activities, Camp Heartland gives kids the chance to just be kids.
Camp Heartland works to dispel and overcome the discrimination of all people affected by HIV/AIDS by practicing unconditional acceptance and passing on that torch through a variety of HIV/AIDS awareness programs.

Children International
As a national organization, we have been involved with Children International since our foundation. In order to maintain our level of involvement within this organization we require that all of our chapters, alumnae, founders and our national board sponsor a child with the assistance of Children International.
-We believe that our Focus, the education and wealth of these children in need, will enrich our future with wisdom and happiness.
-Our Individual Sponsorship includes Children within the 19 Project locations that Children International has established. Some of these sites include Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, The Philippines, and the U.S.
-Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. considers this community service project to be one of our National philanthropies. We are proud sponsors of Children International.
Children International is a non-profit humanitarian organization, which strives to help children around the world overcome the burdens of poverty to become healthy, educated, self-sustaining and contributing members of society.
This goal is achieved primarily through "individual sponsorship" which unites children in need with individual sponsors who wish to address the children’s immediate and basic needs, and give them the tools and opportunities necessary for success. Sponsor contributions help pay for benefits that each child receives.

Special Olympics is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competitions for more than one million children and adults with mental retardation. The goal of the organization is for all persons with mental disabilities to have the chance to become useful and productive citizens who are accepted and respected in their communities. The benefits of participation in Special Olympics include improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence, a more positive self-image, friendships, and increased family support. Since 1968, millions of children and adults with mental retardation have participated in Special Olympics. The tradition to uphold the Special Olympics as a philanthropic commitment of the organization is a reflection of the values of our founding mothers. Our membership has supported and participated in activities sponsored by the Special Olympics, which for SIA has created rewards and education of immeasurable value.
